Classification of Methyl Cellulose Products

Classification of Methyl Cellulose Products

The solubility of methyl cellulose (MC) products can vary depending on the degree of substitution, molecular weight, and concentration of the MC. Generally, MC products are soluble in cold water, and the solubility increases with temperature. However, some high-viscosity MC products may require longer dissolution times or higher temperatures to fully dissolve. In addition, some MC products are designed to be soluble in hot water, making them useful in applications such as hot melt adhesives. MC products with lower degrees of substitution and lower molecular weights tend to have higher solubility, while those with higher degrees of substitution and higher molecular weights may require stronger solvents, such as dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), to dissolve. It is important to consult the product data sheet or manufacturer’s instructions for specific guidance on the solubility of a particular MC product.
